Finding Fatima: An Exercise in Location is an essay I presented at a conference organised by Chelsea College of Art, UAL entitled Speculative Design: Afrofuturist and Indigenous projections symposium held in May 2018.
Beginning with conversations, the work traces my encounters with Fatima—as the daughter of Prophet Mohammed, the site in Portugal where Mary revealed herself to three young children (pictured here), and a sufi saint living in Delhi during the thirteenth century. The essay illuminates the convergence of seemingly unrelated places and people, revealing historical characters who participate in alternative narrative journeys.
